4D ultrasound is also known as dynamic 3D imaging technology. It can capture the baby’s activities in the mother’s womb, not only creating a vivid picture of the fetus’ activities in the womb, but also leaving a precious video clip of the baby’s earliest days.
4D ultrasound can be done at any gestational age. However, it is controversial to perform an ultrasound in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. For safety reasons, we recommend that 4D ultrasound be performed after 16 weeks of pregnancy. This is because the fetus’ limbs and major organs are fully developed after 16 weeks of pregnancy. The best time for the examination is between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy when the amniotic fluid volume is more suitable for fetal malformation screening.
Compared to other diagnostic ultrasound procedures, 4D ultrasound allows for real-time observation of the dynamic movements of the body's internal organs. From vascular malformations to genetic syndromes, clinicians and ultrasonographers can detect and find all kinds of abnormalities through 4D ultrasound. 4D ultrasound can also be affected by some factors such as insufficient amniotic fluid, maternal obesity, fetal malposition, the close proximity of placenta and uterine wall to limbs and face, too much fetal movement, and more. Although fetal cardiac anomaly screening technology perfectly fills the gap of routine fetal anomaly screening, its main target is still severe fatal fetal cardiac anomalies. It is not as sensitive to small cardiac anomalies and surgically treatable anomalies after birth, such as atrial defects and small ventricular defects. Therefore, even in Europe and North America, where the technology is most developed, the diagnosis rate is only 60%. It is important to recognize the limitations of 4D ultrasound and value the role of other tests that should be performed.
